The Root Phase: How to Reconnect to Safety and Start Again

Phoenix Process·Devon Vernetti·Dec 1, 2025· 3 minutes

We all crave transformation — a new chapter, a fresh start, a rise from the ashes.
But before the rise comes the Root.

The Root phase is where every reinvention begins. It’s the quiet undercurrent beneath your breakthroughs, the pause before your next season, and the part most of us are taught to skip.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’ll rest once things calm down,” and then realized nothing ever calms down, congratulations — you’ve met the Root phase. It’s the body’s gentle (or not-so-gentle) way of saying:

“Hey love, before we rise… could we maybe just breathe?”

Why Rooting Comes First

In the Phoenix Process™, Root is about safety and regulation. After seasons of carrying all the things — family, work, hormones, laundry mountains — your nervous system is in the corner waving a tiny white flag. Rooting is how you lower the flag and whisper, “You’re safe now.”

Promise: Rooting rebuilds your foundation so every next step is steadier, softer, and more sustainable.

The Nervous System Connection (and What Perimenopause Has to Do with It)

Your nervous system runs the show — and perimenopause loves to remix the soundtrack. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, cortisol can spike, changing how your body handles stress. Suddenly multitasking feels like extreme sports and small things trigger big feelings. You’re not “losing it.” You’re recalibrating.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine lens, this is Water element wisdom — stillness, restoration, deep replenishment. Stillness isn’t stagnation; it’s renewal. You don’t need winter on the calendar to enter Root — you enter anytime your system says “enough.”

The Root Routine: A Nervous System Reset for Real Women

No 4AM alarms or ice baths required. Just micro-moments that regulate your system and stack up to big calm.

Morning · Ground (2 minutes)

  • Sit up before you stand. Feet on the floor: “Welcome back.”
  • Breath: in 4, out 6. Whisper: “I am safe in my becoming.”
  • Sip something warm before checking if the internet survived the night.

Midday · Regulate (5 minutes)

  • Step away from the screen. Roll shoulders, unclench jaw (yep, that too).
  • Shake arms/legs for 60 seconds to discharge freeze.
  • Hum or sigh (hello, vagus nerve). Dogs may judge you; bodies won’t.

Evening · Restore (10 minutes)

  • Dim lights. One slow song or a candle.
  • Hands over lower belly; breathe there for a minute.
  • Journal: “What feels heavy, and how could I let it rest instead of fix it?”

Weekly Root Ritual

  • Choose one comfort: warm bath, herbal tea, or phone-free walk.
  • Intention: “I replenish energy from the inside out.”

Returning to Root (Again and Again)

The Phoenix Process™ is spiral, not linear. We return to Root in every season of growth — business, love, parenting, health. Each return is wiser, kinder, and more you. Rest isn’t retreat. It’s where the rise begins.

You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re rebuilding from love, not lack. When your nervous system feels safe, your spirit stops sprinting and starts listening.
