Why Most New Year’s Resolutions Fail—And How to Create Real Change by Rooting Instead

Rituals·Devon Vernetti·Dec 29, 2025· 4 minutes

If you’ve ever sworn this will be your year—only to feel exhausted and disconnected by February—this post is for you.

You’ll learn why most New Year’s resolutions fizzle out (it’s not about willpower) and how to create real, sustainable transformation by aligning with winter’s Root energy instead.

By the end, you’ll know how to replace hustle with harmony—and why connection, not discipline, is the foundation of true change.

❄️ The Real Reason Resolutions Fail

Every January, we’re bombarded with messages that say we need to start strong: detox, declutter, do more. But underneath the glitter of “New Year, New You,” there’s a deeper truth—one that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has understood for thousands of years:

Winter isn’t meant for hustling. It’s meant for resting.

In TCM, winter is governed by the Water element, which represents depth, reflection, and wisdom. It’s a season to slow down, gather energy, and reconnect to your inner world. When we push against that rhythm—launching new habits, rigid schedules, or diets—we deplete the very energy our bodies need to sustain long-term growth.

That’s why resolutions built on pressure collapse by February. They’re born from force, not flow.

🌱 The Root Phase: The Real Start of Transformation

In my Phoenix Process™, every transformation begins in the Root Phase—a period of reconnection and grounding.

Just like a tree in winter sends energy inward to strengthen its roots, you’re being invited to do the same. True growth doesn’t start with action; it starts with connection—to your body, your nervous system, and your inner wisdom.

When your nervous system feels calm and safe, clarity naturally follows. That’s when your goals become sustainable, not stressful.

✨ The teaching:

“You don’t need more willpower—you need more root power.

🌿 3 Root Practices for Real Renewal

1. Simplify Your Rituals

Forget the “all or nothing” approach. Choose one nourishing ritual that makes you feel grounded—like journaling while sipping warm tea, walking outside at sunrise, or a five-minute stretch before bed. Consistency in calm beats intensity in chaos.

2. Connect Before You Correct

Instead of trying to “fix” your life, focus on connection—to yourself and others. Reach out to a friend, write a love note to your body, or simply breathe before reacting. Real growth happens when you reconnect, not when you reprimand.

3. Rest Like It’s Your Job

Rest is not laziness—it’s leverage. In TCM, rest nourishes your Kidney energy, which stores your life force (Jing). Protecting it now means more vitality later. Nap without guilt. Go to bed early. Say yes to quiet. This is where your power rebuilds.

The truth is, you don’t need another resolution—you need a root system.

When you honor winter’s slower rhythm, you strengthen your foundation for everything that’s coming next. From this grounded, nourished place, change stops feeling like pressure and starts feeling like peace.

So before you make a list of things to “fix,” ask instead:

“What helps me feel safe, supported, and connected right now?”

That’s the beginning of real transformation—the kind that lasts long after the calendar resets.
